Dimensional Weight

Dimensional weight, also known as volumetric weight, is a pricing technique used in the shipping and packaging industry. It considers the size of a package rather than just its actual weight. This method helps carriers make better use of their space and resources.

Why Dimensional Weight Matters

Shipping companies use dimensional weight to ensure they charge fairly for large, lightweight packages. For example, a big box filled with balloons takes up a lot of space but weighs very little. Using dimensional weight, the carrier charges based on the space the box occupies, not just its weight.

How to Calculate Dimensional Weight

To calculate dimensional weight, you need to measure the length, width, and height of the package. Multiply these dimensions to get the cubic size. Then, divide the cubic size by a dimensional factor, which varies by carrier. The result is the dimensional weight.

Impact on Shipping Costs

Understanding dimensional weight can help you save on shipping costs. By optimizing your packaging, you can reduce the dimensional weight and, in turn, lower your shipping fees. Use smaller boxes or compress items to fit into more compact spaces.

Practical Example

Imagine you have a package that measures 20 inches by 15 inches by 10 inches. The cubic size is 3,000 cubic inches. If the carrier's dimensional factor is 166, you divide 3,000 by 166, resulting in a dimensional weight of about 18 pounds. Even if the actual weight is only 10 pounds, you will be charged for 18 pounds.
